Empress Matilda 1102 – 1167) is our Patron Ancestor of Courage. As one of the claimants to the English throne during the civil war (The Anarchy) her life was filled with uncertainty, succession crises, spousal deaths, hostage negotiations, and a daring escape from rebel forces in the dead of a winters night.
